Switch From Soy to Almond Milk in 2012

I have always just bought rice or soy milk and never really gave it much thought. Soy milk I use in smoothies and rice I like in cereal. I used soy when I wanted a thick and creamy milk and rice when I want something more watery. I accidentally picked up a carton of almond milk a few weeks ago at the grocery store and instantly flipped it over to the back to read the label out of curiosity . I assumed that I would read it had a lot of fat per cup. After all almonds have a lot of fat. I was shocked to read that it only had 2.5 grams of fat, almost half as much as soy milk. And then reading further I see it has more than half the calories of soy. I was sold!

If you’ve never tried unsweetened almond milk, it has the same creamy consistency of soy. Unsweetened soy has 80 calories, while almond has only 35. That may not seem like a big difference but calories can quickly add up. For example, I drink 2 cups of chocolate milk and 1/2 a cup in my oatmeal everyday. And an additional 2 cups a week goes into my occasional smoothies. So simply switching to almond milk has given me a calorie deficit of around 3,800 calories a month. 3,500 calories equals 1 pound a month of weight loss. A simple, effortless act like switching from soy to almond milk can help me trim off 12 to 13 pounds in 1 year, which is incredible.

And if that isn’t enough to convince you to switch, most people find it taste better than soy, especially when comparing unsweetened varieties. So if you drink a lot of soy milk everyday, make a simple change to almond milk in 2012 and by the end of the year you might see your waistline change.

I drink that Silk Pure Almond milk because it is the best taste and texture but has so few calories. But you should be aware that most commercial almond milk is a lot thinner than soy milk and is therefore unappealing to a lot of people. The Silk stuff is somehow thicker than all the others.

Almond has 1/4 of the protein though.

I like both. You might try looking at the protein content of each before deciding that almond milk is automatically the better of the two. Soymilk in my morning smoothie definitely fills me up for longer than when I use almond milk.

Always good to try new things and switch it up! Keep up the thoughtful analysis!

i actually switched to almond milk in august and prefer is SO MUCH over soy. soy used to make me feel a little bloated afterwards which i didn’t really notice until after i switched over to almond. i also think it has a smoother, creamier texture and lighter taste, too ;) unsweetened vanilla is my favorite ;)

Thanks for the comment. If I’m meeting my protein needs everyday with other foods like beans, and I am, why should I worry about getting extra protein that comes with extra fat?

Thanks for the comment. Have you tried Blue Diamond, really good and creamy, it might be better than Silk, I can’t decide.

Thanks for the comment. As I said in my comment to Autumn, If I’m meeting my protein needs everyday with other foods like beans, and I am, why should I worry about getting extra protein that comes with extra fat?

Interesting, I would never have realised! I bought a carton of almond milk over the holidays but have yet to open it. I usually go for soy thought now i am keen to see the difference. One thing I did notice was that the almond milk is so much more expensive than soy (in the UK at least). Maybe i’ll need to start making my own!

Hey jo, I’m wondering if homemade almond milk would have more fat in it. I know that almond milk that you buy is made in a special way. Not sure you would get he same calorie def advantage from homemade.

Ah, I see. You’re prioritizing reducing your caloric intake… not everyone has the same dietary needs. Fat and protein both help make a smoothie “breakfast” for me (instead of a snack). When I use almond milk I add peanut butter. So I guess my $0.02 is still that I like both soy and almond milks.

Fyi, No, I only loosely keep up with how much fiber I eat everyday. I try to get in at least 40 grams. Which is much easier than counting every calorie. Counting calories is a full time job and I don’t have that kind of time to devote and I don’t know anyone who does. But finding out that almond milk had half the calories did make me interested in doing the math if I switched.

Almond milk is great! I use it in my smoothies all the time. Especially for men, it’s better to use almond milk over soy because men actually shouldn’t be eating/drinking that much soy due to the high levels of estrogen…just an fyi

  • http://www.myvegancookbook.com/ My Vegan Cookbook

Steve, I do not believe the estrogen thing and I want to make it clear I’m not a soy basher. However, there are healthier things to eat or drink than tofu or soy milk, it is afterall 40 percent fat and has very little fiber and when compared to a cup of beans it loses. But glad to have it when I need something to make nut cheeses or dressings.

This is all we drink. I was thrilled when Silk came out with this great drink. Our kids LOVE the dark chocolate, it is so yummy!
