Hoot Owl Cookies

The recipe for these cookies I came up with on my own. However the owl shape was an idea I stole from one of my vintage cookbooks. I don’t want to create a Cindy McCain Cookie Gate Scandal, so I’m letting you know that first thing.

I adore owls. They come in only second to the panda bear as cutest creatures on the planet. I’ve often said that if ever I get my dream home, it will have a special tower at the tippy-tippy top for a hoot owl to nest. Preferably an attack owl, who is trained to claw your eyes out if you even so much as look like you’re going to steal something.

One thing the vintage cookbook that I stole the idea for these cookies did not have was clear directions. It took several tries to figure out exactly how to get the owls just right. Thankfully I’ve made an easy illustration for you to follow with clear instructions to guide you.

These cookies are not an incredibly sweet cookie. Very much like a shortbread. The perfect cookie to drink hot cocoa with because the flavors won’t compete. GO TO RECIPE >

Since I don’t have the palm shortening, is there anything I can replace it with?

I doubt you could replace the shortening with something else. I don’t know what it would be.

They look hoot! I used to have a recipe for a similar panda cake, but I have lost it and can’t seem to find it anywhere. :-/
